llex argentinus
Every year approximately 90 Taiwanese fishing vessels sails to the Falkland Islands from January till end of May from Kaohsiung port to catch lllex argentinus, commonly known as the Argentine shortfin squid. Illex argentinus supports one of the world’s largest squid fisheries and is jigger caught which attracts the squid with powerful lights that can be seen in visible band satellite imagery.
The major fishing season is from March to May , when the squids grow into the juvenile and sub-adult stages. Illex squid is short-lived species (approximately 1 year).
The texture of the Illex squid is nice and not too chewy suitable for various dishes which makes it popular in the market.
